"The commissioned head of an aspiring young opera singer with satanic eyebrows, known as TI-YI, which Epstein never liked." (Buckle p. 242, plate 372.)
"Epstein was commissioned to do the head of the aspiring young opera singer, TI-YI. By accentuating the asymmetric qualities of face and hair, Epstein has enabled the viewer to see more of the head at a glance than would normally be possible. This is the sculptor's method of projecting movement into bronze." (Schinman, p. 104, ill.)

Reference from the Goldmark Gallery (Uppingham, Rutland, LE15 9SQ, 01572 821424. www.goldmarkart.com) Exhibition Catalogue September 2011 with an offering price of ₤7,500. "Little seems to be known of Muriel Jackson, the subject of this beautiful patinated bronze, beyond the fact that she was the wife of Epstein's art dealer in Manchester, Robert Jackson, who commissioned the bust. The bronze was cast in an edition of just four..." The version included in the Goldmark Gallery sale was stamped on the bottom of the underside of its base with the words, Epstein at the Whitechapel - Sponsored by Midland Bank & the Henry Moore Foundation, Presumably indicating that it was included in the major retrospective exhibition of Epstein's work held at the Whitechapel Art Gallery in 1987.
"Here we feel a simplicity in the very nature of Muriel herself, although the head is somewhat complex. Epstein emphasizes the broad planes of the forehead and cheeks which are framed by the chains of hair." (Shinman, p.54 ill.)

Literature:
Buckle, R. 1963. Jacob Epstein Sculptor. Cleveland and New York, The World Publishing Company, p. 173. ("Of Germaine Bras, a French seamstress, the sculptor made a head larger than life. His reason for magnifying her was probably that he saw in her some sturdy peasant quality which struck him as specially French; he saw her as Marianne, as France.")
Schinman, Edward P.,1970, Jacob Epstein: A Catalogue of the Collection of Edward P. Schinman. Rutherford, Madison, Teaneck, Farleigh Dickinson University Press, p. 48. ("Germaine Bras, 1930. h 15-1/4", of hardy peasant stock, the French seamstress Germaine Bras is portrayed larger than life. The head is dominated by the sheer size of the features. The hard lines of the face are softened by the gently swept back hair.")
