Thanks for the good images. I believe the initials are later than the age of the bowl. The sans serif font does not look period to the piece. You are right in that it is hewn versus lathe turned. The rasp marks around the base indicate this. The bowl appears to have several later fills and an applied finish. Bowls like this were typically unfinished and take on a complex patina from age and use over decades. They were often refinished in the 1930-60s. The bowl likely dates from 1840-60. And you are correct it is ash burl.
